Sound Bites: Leon Top, The Chronicles of Manimal and Samara, Greysha

Updated: Aug 15, 2020

This week’s ‘Sound Bites’ features a Japanese duo, experimental electronic rock pair and a British singer-songwriter.

Leon Top - “Devil’s Glass”

Mai and Yui Otsuka are a Japanese twin producer duo inspired by acts like Imogen Heap, Lorde and Jessie Ware among others. Their latest single “Devil’s Glass” features dreamy harmonies, soaring melodies and simple, yet emotive lyrics. Leon Top is looking to separate themselves from the rest of the electro-pop genre by effortlessly blending different styles of music and adding in elements they’ve learned by living in different countries. The production on this song is what keeps me coming back to it over and over again. The twins are set to release a second single, “Would It” sometime in August.

The Chronicles of Manimal and Samara - “Atoms”

“Atoms” is an experimental song blending spoken word poetry with electronic rock backings. When I first heard this concept I was intrigued and The Chronicles of Manimal and Samara did not disappoint. Made up of Andrea Papi and Daphne Ang, the duo looks to bring this new genre-defying concept into the musical realm. While not something I would personally gravitate towards, I found myself drawn into the swirling sounds and lyrical themes. I was also given an early release of their second single “Psycopath’s Monologue” to be released on August 28. Following similar themes, spoken word poetry consists of 7 sonnets backed by metallic production. The full length version of the song is 10 minutes long, but there will be a radio edit clocking in at around 4 minutes. While not a conventional style of music, The Chronicles of Manimal and Samara show great passion for what they do and continue to create captivating tracks.

Greysha - “Life Goes Fluently”

At only 17, British singer Greysha is already beginning to make a name for herself. With a wonderfully mature voice, Greysha delivers psychedelic and dream-like melodies that resonate deeply with the listener. Her first single, “Life Goes Fluently” is a must-listen that captures your attention and mesmerizes you until the end. “Do you want to lose some time/Have a cigarette with me” she croons on the track. Her passion for music is clear to see through the work she’s put in already. I fell in love with the song and am so excited to see what Greysha puts out next.
