Sound Bites: Deanna Devore, We the Dead & Dying, Tyrone Sanborn Webster, Kabwasa

This edition of ‘Sound Bites’ features an R&B/neo-soul singer, a deathcore/emo-rap band, an acoustic singer/songwriter, and an R&B/rapper from California.

Deanna Devore - “Love Again”

Deanna Devore is a Chicago singer/songwriter with an R&B/neo-soul style. Her latest single “Love Again” featuring D’Zhari features hypnotic melodies that transport listeners to an almost dream-like state. Her smooth voice mesmerizes listeners while promoting the message that healing is possible after a broken heart and you will be able to move on and love again. The positive message blending with the downtempo beats is emotionally captivating and I thoroughly enjoyed every second of listening to this song. Swaying along, it was impossible not to feel the hope infused in each note.

We the Dead & Dying - “She’s a Demon”

We the Dead & Dying are a deathcore/emo-rap band focusing on topics such as mental health and beating your demons. As this is not a genre I typically listen to, it was definitely harder to evaluate and review, but I did like the production in the background and the beats during the song. The vocals were too autotuned for my taste and had too much reverb on them, but there is potential in the band. Since they started their Youtube channel in August, they still need to find their stride but have done a good job building a foundation and putting their music out there.

Tyrone Sanborn Webster - Intention

Tyrone Sanborn Webster is the drummer for the Austin art-rock band, Desilu, who has decided to take a step back from the drum set and try his hand at writing and performing his own music. His debut album Intention is a thoughtful and introspective record with a minimalistic feel perfect for relaxing/focusing. Armed with only an acoustic guitar, Webster really shows a new side of himself while creating the perfect listening atmosphere. While exciting may not be the first word to jump to mind, a listener feels as though they could melt away into the soundscape. I know that this will definitely be going on my studying playlist as well as be on my rotation for a chill day in. Make sure to keep your eyes peeled for his new EP, Something Human coming in January 2021.

Kabwasa - Maiden Flights

Kabwasa is a 22-year-old singer/rapper from California on a mission to spread good vibes with his music. On his debut studio album, the positivity shines through the production with upbeat tempos and simple instrumentation that adds a lot to the songs. With 9 tracks, each one brings something new and reveals a new side of Kabwasa, from the shift to something darker at the end of “In My Head” to the rapping on the closing track “Whole Lotta Love.” This is a great debut album and you should definitely go check it out for some R&B/hip-hop/rap/neo-soul fusion.
