This edition of ‘Sound Bites’ features music from two singer songwriters, a Ukrainian producer, and an LA-based psychedelic pop artist.
Fox Jackson - “Behind Closed Doors”
Fox Jackson is a London based singer-songwriter who released his single “Behind Closed Doors” in late August. The song has a groovy bassline and a funky overall sound reminiscent of music from years gone by while mixing in current styles. “Behind Closed Doors” mixes elements of jazz and pop together to create an infectious melody that is sure to make any listener smile. The message is a fairly common one: being shut out of a relationship. For such a somber subject, the music and overall tone help to change the vibe and convey the message in a different way.

Sleepwoka - “How I Was Wrong”
Sleepwoka is a Ukrainian musician who made the move to London in 2017. With his latest single, “How I Was Wrong” he challenges the idea that our best days are ahead of us, since we tend to have felt more free when we were younger. The song itself begins with a simple piano instrumental which gives way to a futuristic-sounding production on the first chorus and holds through the rest of the track. Keeping in line with the subject matter, the production also evokes nostalgia with an 80s vibe. Sleepwoka’s vocals tie together the song with a smooth and warm delivery.

Waiting for Smith - “Lines of Love”
Waiting for Smith is the solo project of Harry Lloyd. After a skiing accident in the French alps, he decided to dedicate his life to creating and playing music. His latest single, “Lines of Love,” emphasizes the idea that we all need a compassionate ear in times of trouble. An acoustic guitar is the primary instrumentation and reminds me of Vance Joy. The song is catchy and was stuck in my head for at least a day after listening to it. It’s a sun-soaked track, producing a charming tune that you should definitely listen to.

Tyson Kelly - Plastic Rock Star EP
Tyson Kelly is a Los Angeles based artist who released his latest EP, Plastic Rock Star, on September 16. Blending psychedelic tones with rock and pop music, he creates an EP with catchy melodies. Intending to write the album with good vibes radiating, after only one listen, it is clear that Kelly achieved his goal. “Am I Ever Gonna See You Again” is reminiscent of HAIM in terms of overall sound and style. Kelly shows range on the EP, from the funk-filled “Get Me Higher” to the more mellow and introspective “I Wasn’t Saying That.”
