Sound Bites: DOMI, BARBUDO, Horse Halo, S!SMA

This edition of ‘Sound Bites’ features a diverse electro-pop band, a pop-funk duo, a collaboration project, and a techno artist.

DOMI - “Someone New”

DOMI is an alternative electro-pop band based in the UK. With members hailing from Norway, England, the Czech Republic, and the USA, their music incorporates influences from all across the globe. Their latest single, “Someone New” is electric, with smooth synth-production and gorgeous vocals that fit the sound perfectly. As a small band, their sound is polished and sounds very professional and experienced. The song features a gradual build with a solid drop before the final chorus. “Someone New” could easily be a hit on the dance floor and will be sure to have you up on your feet.

BARBUDO - “Magnolia Mansion”

BARBUDO is a pop-funk duo made up of brothers Ben and Harry Stanworth from the south of England. Their latest single “Magnolia Mansion” creates a dynamic atmosphere with tight rhythms tied up with expressive vocals. Disco music has made a revival this year and finds a home with BARBUDO, whose take on the classic style breathes new life into it. The idea behind “Magnolia Mansion” was the feeling of lightness and happiness that accompanies late spring/early summer. The feel-good track had me tapping my toes and doing a little dance as I listened to it again and again.

Horse Halo - “Starlit Destination”

Horse Halo is the duo of Tyrone Sanborn Webster and Erik David Hidde (aka Prison Escapee). After discovering each other’s music through Instagram pages, the two decided to team up and collaborate on a new project blending their styles together. Webster’s mellow acoustics shine through on the guitars of “Starlit Destination,” while Hidde’s experimental production is also made clear. The song feels like it should accompany a movie scene where someone is lost, alone, and wandering a desert. I was pleasantly surprised by how well their sounds complement each other to create something new and unique.

S!SMA - Vintage House EP

S!SMA is an up and coming project from LA, focused on making club beats and dance floor anthems. Their latest EP, Vintage House, is composed of 3 songs, the most prominent being the opener “I’ll Stand By You.” I don’t know a lot about techno and dance music in general, but for someone just starting out, S!SMA sounds extremely polished and has tight, pulsing beats. Each song is distinguished from each other and has many layers that meld together to create a dynamic track.
