Sound Bites: Johnny Ashby, Rhyal Knight, Imogen Mahdavi, KiNG MALA

This edition of ‘Sound Bites’ features a British singer/songwriter, a new solo artist, a London-based singer, and a Los Angeles artist.

Johnny Ashby - In Bloom EP

Johnny Ashby is a British singer/songwriter who recently released his latest EP, In Bloom. With a minimalistic take on production to create a folk-rock sound tinged with Americana. Ashby wears his heart on his sleeve with emotive vocals and personal songs that reflect growth and change. The idea behind the EP was to have positive and uplifting messages. “I think all the songs lyrically really address where we are in this very moment. They’re very true of the time in which they were written.” Ashby said about his release. I really enjoyed listening to this EP and love this style of music a lot. I can definitely see myself listening to this again.

Rhyal Knight - “Summers Over Soon”

Rhyal Knight spent the first half of the decade touring with his psych-rock band Cold Cold Sweats, and has been experimenting with solo songwriting ever since. “Summer’s Over Soon” is a chill track exploring the end of a summer romance and what happens when summer eventually ends. This song has a really cool vibe and employs a gradual build that culminates with Knight declaring that he is “going crazy”. Knight’s voice is emotive and blends with the track perfectly. I’m excited to see what Knight has coming out next on his solo journey.

Imogen Mahdavi - “Some Things are Best Oversaid”

Imogen Mahdavi is a London-based singer/songwriter who released her single, “Some Things Are Best Oversaid” in late September. Mahdavi’s vocals are nothing like you’ve ever heard before and create an atmosphere of delicate romance backed by country-tinged guitars. Echoing, sun-soaked harmonies uplift the listener and encourage people to say how they feel, even if they feel they’ve already oversaid it. “Life is short and I am not one to be coy about my love for someone,” Mahdavi emphasizes. This track is simple and impactful and led me to look more into Mahdavi’s discography. Her debut EP is set to come out on December 11.

KiNG MALA - GEMiNi EP

KiNG MALA is a Los Angeles singer whose latest EP, GEMiNi, showcases the two sides of her: someone who is confident and unapologetic and someone who is softer and more vulnerable. The name GEMiNi comes into play as the zodiac sign also depicts twins and highlights the “two sides of the same coin” aspect that KiNG MALA highlighted. Her music is infectious and gets stuck in your head easily. Fans of Billie Eilish are sure to latch onto the music of KiNG MALA and get lost in darker songs like “If I Try to Find You.”
